The siren song of Hadoop

Hadoop seems incredibly well-suited to shouldering machine-learning workloads. With HDFS you can store both structured and unstructured data across a cluster of machines, and SQL-on-Hadoop technologies like Hive make those structured data look like database tables. Execution frameworks like Spark let you distribute compute across the cluster as well. On paper, Hadoop is the perfect environment for running compute-intensive distributed machine learning algorithms across a vast amount of data.

Microsoft Shifts Focus to Power BI Apps with New Premium Offering

Microsoft today announced plans to offer a new Power BI Premium subscription plan, while also previewing a new Power BI apps sharing capability.

The two additions to Microsoft’s business intelligence visualization service are somewhat related. End users accessing the new Power BI apps will either need to have existing Power BI Pro licensing in place or they’ll need the new Power BI Premium licensing.

Infor is buying this Business Intelligence Player to take on Oracle

Infor, the privately held business software company backed by $2.5 billion from Koch Industries, is acquiring business intelligence specialist Birst.
Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed, although sources put the price at about $100 million.

Is the business intelligence market finally maturing?

No.
The buy side business intelligence (BI) market is nowhere near maturity and will continue to be a greenfield opportunity to many BI vendors. Forrester’s research still shows that homegrown shadow IT BI applications based on spreadsheets and desktop databases dominate enterprises, and only somewhere between 20 percent and 50 percent of enterprise structured data is being curated and available to enterprise BI tools and applications.

2017 State Of Cloud Business Intelligence

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the preferred cloud platform by 73% of companies deploying Cloud BI apps.
40% plan to increase spending on private cloud and 34% are increasing budgets for public cloud platforms.
33% of enterprises are relying on public cloud-based BI apps today, increasing from 13% in 2012.
31% of respondents currently use Cloud Business Intelligence (BI), a 6% increase over 2016.
Google Analytics and Salesforce are the two most preferred third-party connectors for Cloud BI.

Why Apple, SAP are bringing iOS to the enterprise
